show & tell

the book's in the bag. final proofing has been done, blurbs and dedications and acknowledgements have been written, the launch date has been set and plans are slowly coming together. but it strikes me that now, i've finally let the novel go. the next time it comes back to me it will no longer be a bundle of pale pages, all wobbly and shapeless and prone to scattering. it will have shape. it will have definition. it will have blossomed. it'll be a book, and i'll probably want to spend a whole week with it alone in my bedroom, poking and prodding and flicking through and sniffing it, wondering at the fact that i made it.
okay, i'll shut up now.

today i got a very pleasant surprise in the mail - proof copies of a short story that i have coming out in an anthology called girl's night in 4. i'm really excited to be a part of this project - i've read other war child anthologies, and it's huge to have been invited to submit to one of them. the story i wrote for them is called 'not really a party girl', and it's quite different to the novel. it'll be fun to have them both coming out at around the same time.

on saturday night, i was showing my nephew a pdf copy of the book cover.
he said to me 'when you get a copy of that, can i take one to school for show and tell?'
i gave him a hug and said 'that's so sweet, sure you can! just get your dad to buy you one.'

You have every right to look, feel, stroke and sniff to your heart's content. It's fantastic and many congratulations to you. And bugger just your nephew's dad buying your book, if he's taking the pdf of the cover to school, all the teachers should be buying a copy too!

Enjoy it as long as you can, you deserve it!
