yesterday i found out that mary martin's in southbank have five copies of my book on order. the lady behind the counter was quite impressed - given the size of the store, apparently they only ever go with two copies of a first novel to start off with. five books, she said, was 'a block', meaning that if they are placed face-out on the shelf, they come right to the front. she said that the sales person must have been pretty excited about the book for their store to have bought five (thank you, oh enthusiastic salesperson!). so even though i have many unread novels around the house at the moment, i bought a novel before i left (this book, australian edition titled 'everything happens for a reason'). as you can imagine, when i got home i was itching to know who else had ordered copies of my book. i had already heard through a couple of friends that dymocks had ordered (the book shows up on their site if you search for it), and i knew that readings would have ordered, seeing as the book is being officially launched there. so what does shalini do? she googles her little heart out. as a result i now know that both collins and angus & robertson have copies on order - how many, i have no idea. i can't tell if borders do yet. maybe i'll make mark go in and ask someone for me!
