launch recollections, part one

on initially walking in to readings in port melbourne, it was a bit of a shock to see a whole bookshelf laden with multiple copies of my book (apart from the bottom shelves which still housed some jk rowling, but i had more shelf-space than her for sure!). i turned right to the counter, where more copies were stacked; it seemed that the staff at readings had propped them around the shop wherever they could. aimee had also made some a3 size copies of the cover, and these were pinned up around the venue, too. the whole place had been taken over by 'the bollywood beauty'. i was understandably a little jellified by the whole thing, but people began to arrive and distracted me from my own unstable state. so many people turned up! i am still overwhelmed just thinking about it. bob sessions opened the talking, followed by clare forster (who launched the book), and it was surreal to listen to the things they were saying and digest that it was me they were talking about. then clare called me to the mic, and i proceeded to thank everyone for coming and then two people in particular - clare and mark. mark tried to hide behind the video camera, but i found him! i walked off thinking 'you didn't thank aimee! you didn't thank cathy larsen for the cover! you didn't even thank bob!', but it was done, and i apologised and thanked everyone one one-on-one later. after that it was signing time... and i was there till the end. there was an actual queue. it was insane.

afterward, a small group of stayers moved on to molly bloom's, so i talked my parents into going there for a meal - luckily we caught their kitchen just in time. after dinner we had a couple of drinks, took a few more happy snaps and then came home. the whole evening felt like three minutes. i wish i'd had time to catch up with more people, to chat more, but i guess that's what saturday's party is for. i am so looking forward to it!

Congratulations Shalini. I am stepping out to get your book in my lunch hour. I am so excited for you - must be a whirlwind experience. Enjoy every bit of it!

Oh and I emailed a recipe for those Chai cupcakes - hope you have fun making them. Let me know how it goes :)

Hey Shalini,

Well, it's not quite as impressive as Readings, but I can tell you that yesterday lunchtime, Borders here in North Ryde (Sydney-town) had 4 copies of your books on their shelves. I not-so-subtly turned one copy face-out, seeing as they were all hidden spine-out.

Evidently my little guerilla marketing campaign worked, because by the time I came back after work to buy myself a copy, there were only 3 copies left. So, I believe I can safely conclude that I'm not the only Bollywood Beauty fan living around here :-)

I'm so excited for you!! Hope you have a blast at the launch party. I'm just sorry Shell and I can't join you!

Cheers,
Andrew

Ok, so you will not believe this, but yesterday at Borders in North Ryde I popped in to buy The Bollywood Beauty (Wednesday was out, as I could not get to a bookstore), so after meeting a friend for lunch on Thursday I wondered in.

Fiction section, Top shelf, far right, the book, as Andrew placed it was turned face-out - it is now sitting on my desk at home waiting to be read :)

Freaky!

Shalini - we also took pics LOL. I'll post them on my flickr site soon!

shalini! I was in Brisbane when your launch happened! sorry didn't make it but glad to hear it went so swimmingly. was trying to work in gratuitous chai reference but haven't managed to do so... :)

hope you're basking in your success. I'm posting something re "new books" to the asian-australian list soon (brian castro's new novel is just out and I forgot to pimp merlinda bobis' _banana heart_ when it came out). so feel free to send me promotional blurb that I can tout if you'd like.

congrats!

hi shalini. great party and great to meet you and your friends!
I have emailed Angus and Robertson today - after discussing Temple (?)moving your book from Biography to Fiction, I found they had done the same at Camberwell - in the biography section, spine out. So, it is now sitting on the new release stand, face out looking rather more suited to its surroundings.

A&R response (very prompt reply too):

"Thank you for taking the time to write to us with these comments; they have been passed to our Category manager for Fiction who will look into this apparent misclassification and follow it up."
