in with the in-crowd

i have a little piece in the current edition of the virgin inflight magazine, voyeur. it would be handy if they're still selling the books at airport bookstores... if anyone finds themselves browsing the shelves at an airport bookstore sometime soon, let me know if you see my purple spine in the shelves. i only seem to find myself in bookstores that don't stock it lately... oh, boo-hoo, right? haha!

today i sent off a short story to a journal in the hope that they'll publish it. i wrote to the editor a few weeks ago to ask if they were still accepting fiction submissions and he wrote back saying yes, they were, 'especially from tried and true authors like yourself'. as nice as it is to hear/read someone say that, it's a little bizarre because i feel i'm the same person i was before i got published. i wrote back then, i write now, but now it seems to mean a lot more. yes, it is true that my writing style has gotten better over the years partially due to practice and partially due to study. but if i hadn't gottena book published, i would have kept reading and writing, and i think my writing would still have developed in a similar way. would i still have been included in the 'tried and true' category? interesting.

it's like that age old catch-22, you can't get a job unless you have experience, and you can't get experience until someone gives you a job. anyhoo, we'll see what they make of the new story, which is quite different from the other work i've done. i'll keep you posted.
